Alyssa Mates – Newsletter, Fourth Edition. Walk to the water…
We’ve been on a bit of a journey together these past couple of months – feet on the earth, eyes in the morning light, sitting in silence. This month I want to take you somewhere even better. I want to take you to the beach.
There is something that happens when you walk along the water’s edge that is hard to put into words. Your shoulders drop. Your breathing slows. The mental clutter that followed you out the door starts to thin. By the time you’ve walked a few hundred metres, something has shifted – and it’s not just in your head.
The Science Behind The Feeling:
The beach is one of the richest sources of negative ions on earth. These are tiny, electrically charged particles that are released in abundance where water meets air – in the surf, in the spray, in the crash of a wave. When we breathe them in, they are thought to increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, lift our mood, and reduce the stress hormone cortisol.
In other words, the reason you feel so much better after a beach walk isn’t just poetic. Your body is actually changing. The air itself is doing something for you.
So breathe it in. Deeply. That salty, sharp, unmistakable air – let it fill your lungs and do its work. This is not indulgence. This is maintenance.
Money Is Like The Waves:
Stand at the water’s edge for a while and watch. The waves come in. The waves go out. In. Out. Always moving, never stopping, never truly empty and never truly full. The ocean doesn’t panic when the tide goes out. It doesn’t grasp and hoard when it comes back in. It just flows – endlessly, rhythmically, in its own time.
Money is like that. It comes in and it goes out. It ebbs and it flows. There will be lean periods and abundant ones. The mistake so many of us make is treating every outgoing wave as a crisis and every incoming one as something to desperately hold onto. That kind of relationship with money is exhausting – and it keeps us in a constant state of fear.
What if instead you could trust the rhythm? What if you could build a financial life that worked with the flow rather than against it – knowing that when you manage your money with intention and self-responsibility, the tide always has somewhere good to go?
Take A Moment To Just Be:
We are so practised at doing. Planning, problem-solving, optimising, achieving. Even our relaxation often has a goal attached to it. But there is something quietly revolutionary about going to the beach and having no agenda at all. No podcast in your ears. No phone in your hand. Just you, the sand, the sound of the water, and the smell of the salt.
Let yourself have that. Fully. Without guilt.
Because in that space – when you are not performing or producing or scrolling – you come back to yourself. The version of you that exists underneath all the roles and responsibilities. The woman who knows her own mind, trusts her own instincts, and doesn’t need anyone else to tell her what she wants from her life or her money.
Come Back To You:
This is the thread running through everything I’ve been sharing with you – grounding, silence, morning light, and now this. All of it is really just different paths back to the same place. Back to yourself. Back to your own clarity, your own voice, your own knowing.
The answers about your financial life – what you truly need, what you genuinely want, what you’re ready to change – they are not out there somewhere. They are in here. And the beach, of all places, has a remarkable way of reminding you of that.
Your Invitation This Month:
Get yourself to the water. It doesn’t need to be long or far. Just go, and while you’re there:
Leave the phone in your pocket or just leave it at home.
Breathe in the salt air – slowly and on purpose.
Watch the waves and let them remind you that money flows.
Ask yourself: what does coming back to me look like right now?
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up – for the walk, and for yourself.
If this resonated with you, reach out – I’d love to connect.
